Recognizing warning signs 

Behavior speaks volumes and can be a key indicator of the potential for child abuse or neglect. If you witness repeated occurrences of the following signs, contact The Exchange Center and make a referral that can help stop abuse before it happens.

Warning signs for a child:

  • Lacks adult supervision
  • Does not want to be at home
  • Has difficulty concentrating
  • Appears to always be waiting for something and is apprehensive
  • Lacks suitable clothing, hygiene or meals
  • Is depressed, hostile, overly passive, withdrawn or exhibits eating disorders
  • Has not received medical attention for physical disorders
  • Has learning problems that can't be attributed to specific causes


Warning signs for an adult:

  • Rarely touches or looks at child
  • Blames the child for problems
  • Sets expectations the child cannot meet
  • Shows little concern for the child
  • Sees the child in an entirely negative light
  • Asks others to use harsh physical discipline on the child
  • States he/she does not like the child
  • Is overly protective of the child
  • Abuses alcohol or drugs
  • Was abused as a child
