Recognizing warning signs
Behavior speaks volumes and can be a key indicator of the potential for child abuse or neglect. If you witness repeated occurrences of the following signs, contact The Exchange Center and make a referral that can help stop abuse before it happens.
Warning signs for a child:
- Lacks adult supervision
- Does not want to be at home
- Has difficulty concentrating
- Appears to always be waiting for something and is apprehensive
- Lacks suitable clothing, hygiene or meals
- Is depressed, hostile, overly passive, withdrawn or exhibits eating disorders
- Has not received medical attention for physical disorders
- Has learning problems that can't be attributed to specific causes
Warning signs for an adult:
- Rarely touches or looks at child
- Blames the child for problems
- Sets expectations the child cannot meet
- Shows little concern for the child
- Sees the child in an entirely negative light
- Asks others to use harsh physical discipline on the child
- States he/she does not like the child
- Is overly protective of the child
- Abuses alcohol or drugs
- Was abused as a child
